The following is an excerpt from a family history written by May E. Anderson.
Raymond’s dad, Cranston, was born at Rockford, Washington, on March 9, 1883. Cranston and Hannah were married in Rockford in 1908 and shortly thereafter moved to Spokane. They never owned a home, and Cranston never had a steady job until he started working as a night guard at Galena (Fairchild Air Force Base) where they found him one morning dead from a heart attack. The family was living at 1208 W. Providence at the time. Walt, Donella and Phyllis were still in the home. Walt went into the service shortly thereafter. Raymond and I had been married for just over four years.
Cranston died on November 18, 1942. Hannah continued to live alone in the house on Providence until five months prior to her death. She died on August 5, 1958, at age 73 in Harrisburg, Oregon, where she was living with her daughter Donella. She passed away in her sleep of heart failure.
Cranston Anderson registered for the draft during WWI on September 12, 1918. In what I consider an amazing coincidence another great grandfather, John Leonard Denton, registered for the draft on the exact same date! Cranston’s draft registration card states that he had a “broken leg at present.” We might never know what happened that left him with a broken leg but when going through some old photos I discovered this picture of Cranston on crutches.
Cranston on crutches. Exact date unknown. Could it be circa 1918? |
